REFLECTION
Experience
This semester provided a rich and diverse learning experience that helped me grow as a designer. Task 1 required an in-depth analysis of a packaging design, focusing on its functionality, aesthetics, and marketability. It challenged me to understand the principles of effective packaging while designing and creating detailed unfolded and assembled diagrams. The process deepened my appreciation for the complexity of packaging design.
Task 2, a group project, introduced me to the dynamics of team collaboration. We designed a minimalist coffee cup packaging, balancing simplicity with creativity. This task highlighted the importance of collective brainstorming and efficient communication within a group to produce cohesive designs.
Task 3 was a collaboration with students from other disciplines, which was both challenging and rewarding. The need to communicate effectively with another team and adapt designs to meet their expectations taught me the importance of flexibility and empathy in design work. Creating a packaging design based on their requirements and then expanding it into at least six related product designs pushed my creative and problem-solving abilities.
Observation
Packaging design is more than just aesthetics; it involves functionality, user-friendliness, and clear communication of the product’s purpose. The details, such as the placement of logos, typography, and fold lines, play a significant role in its overall effectiveness.
Working in teams, especially with members from other disciplines, requires clear and open communication. Misunderstandings can lead to delays, but regular feedback loops help ensure the designs meet everyone's expectations.
Every project had unique requirements, from creating minimalist coffee cup packaging to designing for other disciplines’ products. Adapting design principles to fit specific constraints and goals was a recurring theme throughout the semester.
The minimalist style in Task 2 and the client-focused requirements in Task 3 reinforced the importance of simplicity and clarity in design, ensuring the message is visually compelling and easy to understand.
Findings
Packaging is not just a container; it’s a medium to communicate brand values, attract consumers, and enhance the product experience. Designing with this perspective led to more thoughtful and impactful solutions.
Whether it’s a coffee cup or a collaborative product, understanding the end-users’ needs and preferences ensures the design is not only visually appealing but also practical and relevant.
Working with another discipline was challenging but enlightening. It underscored the importance of adaptability and effective communication to ensure the final output aligns with the client’s vision.
Task 2 taught me how to express creativity within the constraints of minimalism, focusing on balance, proportion, and effective use of space to create visually striking designs.
