LECTURES

Color correction and color grading are crucial steps in ensuring visual consistency and aesthetic appeal in videos. The goal of color correction is to match the color temperature of each clip, ensuring whites appear white and blacks appear black, while balancing all colors. Tools like Lumetri Scopes (including RGB Parade, Waveform, and Vectorscope) help set brightness values for each shot and adjust basic correction parameters such as exposure, highlights, and shadows. The eyedropper tool and the color editing workspace can be used to fine-tune temperature and tint, ensuring accurate colors.

Color grading enhances the corrected images to make them more visually appealing and expressive. By increasing contrast and saturation and applying new tones, you can give the footage a fresh look. Adjustment layers and S curves are used to refine contrast, while the color wheels allow specific colors to be assigned to shadows, highlights, and midtones, achieving a more nuanced color grading effect. The Effects workspace and Lumetri Scopes window help monitor and adjust these changes, ensuring visual consistency and quality in the final video.

In class we did a color grading exercise like this, using Clip 3 as a reference for color correction and making adjustments.

Project 2 / Shooting Practise & Editing

Exercise 1 : Make the shot
Week5:

Week6:

Preparation Steps

Before editing the recorded video, I took the following preparatory steps:

  1. Review and Listen to the Material:

    • I thoroughly reviewed and listened to all the recorded video and audio materials to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the content.
  2. Selecting Clips:

    • I selected the highest quality clips from all the materials, deciding which parts would be included in the final product.
  3. Organizing Clips:

    • The selected clips were organized and categorized into two separate folders: one for video clips and one for audio clips. This categorization made it easier to access and manage the materials during the editing process.

By following these steps, I was able to approach the editing process more systematically, ensuring the final video was of high quality and coherence.

Exercise 2 : TikTok videos

Week9:
We were tasked with creating a TikTok/Instagram video based on our personal interests.

Video Theme:
I recorded my daily life. Because it was a very daily content, I innovated in the shooting techniques, using stop motion animation, panorama, close-up, medium shot, etc. I also cut a lot of transition content in editing.

TikTok Proposal:

I edited the video using Jianying and added some music and subtitles.

Feedback

Week5:
Mr. Martin explained the assignment to us and gave each group a specific time to use the studio.

Week6:
This week, we started shooting normally. Mr. Martin gave us a lot of suggestions. He explained to me how to use the radio and gave us some lighting suggestions during the shooting process.

Week7:
We edited the video this week and Mr. Martin suggested that I might tweak the sound of the actors’ voices and background noises.

Week9:
I showed my video to Mr. Martin and he suggested that I make some color adjustments to make the overall video color more uniform.

Reflection

Participating in this project has been an engaging and challenging experience. Initially, I planned to shoot a horror film, but due to time constraints, the need for multiple characters, and logistical issues like transportation, this idea became unfeasible. The short duration of the project did not allow sufficient time for extensive shooting and planning. As a result, I continuously revised and changed the content, ultimately shifting from a horror film concept to a creative transition video. This format allowed me to showcase a variety of techniques and scenes, creating a unique visual experience through innovative transitions.

Though this creative direction involved more shooting and editing, it provided me with the opportunity to learn and explore a wide range of fundamental filming techniques. For instance, I learned how to use different types of shots such as close-ups, wide shots, and moving shots, optimizing each scene's presentation. Additionally, I acquired skills in setting up the camera according to scene requirements to achieve the best shooting results.
