TASK 3 : Design

INSTRUCTIONS

Submission Requirement :

1. We need to find some visual references to inspire the design, based on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal. I have chosen Goal 7 — Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all.

2. Sketch 3-5 rough drafts based on my own ideas.

3. The final design should be in 4A size, JPEG format.

4. Explain the decisions made in the design, its significance/purpose in 150-200 words.

Design

1.Moodboard:

I have chosen Goal 7 from the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG), which focuses on ensuring access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all. The designer I've selected for reference and research is Shepard Fairey. Here are some visual references I have found.

2.Sketch

Sketch1:I placed the Earth as the dominant element in the center of the composition. Following the style of the designer I selected, Shepard Fairey, I divided the canvas into four sections using four straight lines. In each section, I depicted factory pollution, clean energy windmills, solar panels, and natural environment respectively. Around the Earth, I added textures corresponding to each section's characteristics, which will be distinguished by color. The design principles I aim to embody include emphasis, asymmetrical balance, and contrast.

Sketch1

Sketch2:For this piece, I drew inspiration from the designs of Alphonse Maria Mucha, incorporating some symmetrical elements into the background. I plan to fill the background with various colored elements and add some text around the Earth. Following the style of the designer I selected, I included some textured elements in the composition, which I will later colorize and blend into patterns. The design principles I aim to convey include balance, unity, and emphasis.

Sketch2

Sketch3:For this piece, I used relaxed lines. I intend to depict the ship from a relaxed perspective, with some factory chimneys and clean energy windmills in the distance. Later, I plan to incorporate color elements into the design. The design principles I aim to reflect are contrast, emphasis, repetition, and movement.

3.Final Idea:

In the end, following Mr. Zeon's advice, I chose Sketch 2. Drawing inspiration from the designs of Alphonse Maria Mucha, I incorporated some symmetrical elements into the background, placing windmills and the Earth in the center of the composition.

The title of the artwork is "Green Energy." Medium: Digital Illustration on Canvas.

After modification:

The artwork, inspired by United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 7 - Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all, draws from the design style of Shepard Fairey. It incorporates elements such as color, graphics, and patterns, with key color elements of red, yellow, black, and blue separated by distinct graphic elements. Placing the windmills prominently in the center emphasizes the theme of clean energy, highlighting the principle of emphasis. Given the severe environmental damage caused by energy pollution, the Earth is also positioned centrally. Referencing Alphonse Maria Mucha's style, the background features symmetrical and balance elements, such as the mirrored leaves above, which complement the theme of green energy. Intricate patterns are added within each color segment, with a pattern representing voltage line towers integrated behind the windmills. In addition to the main subjects, other elements in the composition utilize color harmony, such as the yellow tones in the top-left and bottom-right corners and the red tones in the top-right and bottom-left corners, utilizing repetition. The inclusion of the Earth symbolizes our efforts to reduce energy pollution and protect the environment.

The design principles I aim to convey include emphasis, balance, repetition, and symbolism.

Feedback

Week6:

In the sixth week, I sketched three drafts with UNSDG Goal 7 as the theme. Mr. Zeon provided some suggestions, advising me to combine the three sketches and incorporate the design style of the chosen designer to ensure harmony and unity in the elements of the composition. Over the weekend, I redesigned my three drafts and shared them with Mr. Zeon. His recommendation was to proceed with the second sketch for the final design.

Reflection

Experience:

Taking the Principles of Design course has been an enriching journey for me, offering insights into various aspects of design and creative processes. Through engaging lectures, hands-on projects, and discussions, I have gained a deeper understanding of design principles and their applications in real-world scenarios.

Observation:

Throughout the course, I observed the importance of thorough research and analysis in the design process. Task 1, where we selected a Sustainable Development Goal (UNSDG) and relevant designer, allowed me to delve into Goal 7 and explore the works of Shepard Fairey. Task 2 involved visual research on Fairey's designs, where I learned to dissect his style, color palette, and graphic elements. Task 3 challenged me to create my own design piece inspired by Goal 7 and Fairey's influence, emphasizing the integration of design principles into my work.

Findings:

One of the key findings from this course is the significance of context and purpose in design. Understanding the underlying message and audience requirements are crucial in delivering effective design solutions. Additionally, I discovered the power of symbolism and visual communication in conveying complex ideas, as evident in my final design piece, which aimed to raise awareness about sustainable energy access.

In conclusion, the Principles of Design course has not only honed my technical skills but also instilled in me a deeper appreciation for the art and science of design. Moving forward, I intend to apply the principles learned in this course to my future design projects, ensuring that each creation resonates with its intended audience and serves its intended purpose.
