INSTRUCTIONS

LECTURES1
Week6:
Mr Hafiz briefed us about Project 2 - Decisive Moment. This week we need to find and read some urban legends and choose some fragments or episodes to create a decisive poster. The decisive moment is the turning point or climax of the story.

Week7:
Mr Hafiz introduced us to the theory of composition in this class - foreground, middle ground and background. And illustrate that if you place them in the right place, you can easily catch the audience's attention. We can use contrast and size differences to highlight the main focus.

1.Foreground - closer to the viewer
Main focus, (contrast through size difference and color highlights)

2.Medium shot-middle ground(through size difference and light and shadow contrast)

3.Background - furthest from the audience
placed in the background (contrast through shape, light, shadow)

#The teacher showed us an example, "Soloist".The following is a snippet I captured and briefly analyzed.
Fig7.1 Soloist
This is a short animated film that speaks for women and talks about the many things that women are still prohibited from doing in many places today. For example, in the film, women are prohibited from dancing, women are prohibited from owning dogs, women are prohibited from singing, women are prohibited from riding bicycles, etc.
In the film, close shots, medium shots, and long shots are used to illustrate the content.

Fig7.2
In the scene shown above, the woman holding the letter and the dog become the main focus - the main subject of the painting. There is an obvious size difference between the main character and the background. The main character has a higher color saturation than the background, showing an obvious contrast in color brightness. This is a close-up shot.

                                                                         Fig7.3
In the scene shown above, there are size differences between the characters and the background. At the same time, there are also contrasting changes in light and shadow.

                                                                           Fig7.4
In the scene shown above, the overall picture is relatively dim. The shape of the light through the door can determine the position of the light. There is also some shadow contrast, which can be used to determine that this is the background.

#Applying textures and noise to designs :
Mr Hafiz taught us how to use the effect function in Adobe Illustrator to achieve the effect of grain texture. We need to first copy an object onto the object itself, then use gradients to achieve the effect we want, and finally use texture effects to achieve the texture of that object.

Week 8: Recess Week

Week9:
Mr Hafiz introduced to us the concept of limited gif, secondary animation and how it is used. We learned the differences between secondary animation, overlapping animation and excessive animation and many details.https://thunderpaw.co/comic/ch1/1a.gif Auxiliary animation is any additional animation that emphasizes the main action to create more dimension without overlapping with the next scene. The teacher gave us many examples to help us understand.

We were asked to create an urban legend art poster and a restricted GIF

Decisive Moment Poster and Animation
Part1 Mood Board and Research

I read a lot of urban legends from different countries, and I chose a supernatural legend that actually happened in Japan to make an emotional template. This urban legend is called Spoon.
This urban legend is a supernatural event in Japan. It tells the story of a primary school that invited two magicians to perform magic tricks for students on Children's Day in Japan. One magician said that he could bend an iron spoon with his thoughts. Another magician didn't believe that he could bend an iron spoon with his thoughts. He also asked a female teacher in a red skirt to check whether there was anything wrong with the spoon……

Below is the mind map I made.

➤Mind Mapping PDF:

After that, I looked for some related emotional templates based on this mind map. I think these provide some reference value for the production of posters and gifs of this urban legend.

➤Sketches

There are two types of sketches. The first type embodies the scene, the magician, the spoon and the decapitated female teacher. The second one focuses more on the broken spoon and the female teacher.

Poster
For the final poster and animation, I combined the two sketches I made above and made a classroom scene, taking the main characters and the spoon.

Feedback

Week7:
Mr. Hafiz looked at my urban legend sketch and gave some suggestions. My sketch should be designed based on the rule of thirds.

Week8:
Mr. Hafiz suggested that I could add more time shadows on the background or objects to make the picture more layered.

Week9:
Mr. Hafiz suggested that I change the animation I made - the falling head in the original animation to make the head shake from side to side. He also suggested that I add some more elements to the picture to make the picture look more layered.

Reflection

During this mission, I learned some stories about urban legends and tried to make them into posters and animations. At first I didn't consider the importance of composition. After the teacher reminded me, I noticed the importance of composition and its impact on the entire picture. I also learned the definition and details of the rule of thirds, as well as the triptych. These will make me more familiar with some methods of making illustrations.
